On Election Day, I want to shout out an amazing group of young people.
Yesterday, the Kansas Youth and Government program held its first annual conference since 2020, and we were proud to take nine outstanding students to represent Republic County High School.
In preparation for the event, these students spent the past few weeks researching, crafting legislation, debating bills from other school delegations, and mastering parliamentary procedure — they didn’t just participate, they embodied what elite civic leadership looks like.
Our students debated their legislation, considered important Kansas policy issues, and collaborated with peers from across the state to craft solutions they were passionate about. This was an incredible opportunity to work alongside some of the brightest and most engaged students from Buhler, Wichita, and the greater Kansas City area — and our Buffaloes proved they belong among the best. Among those many successes was our own Billy Cherney, who was elected to serve as Speaker of the House for the Kansas Youth and Government delegation.
As we mark Election Day, it’s a perfect reminder that teaching our youth about government, democracy, and civic responsibility isn’t just a lesson — it’s vital for the future of our community and our nation. Experiences like this help students begin developing the knowledge, confidence, and civic habits that will one day make them thoughtful and engaged leaders.
We could not be prouder of the way they carried themselves and represented both our school and our community.
